At the Hotel UHU, you will not find a waste basket on your breakfast table. Because we make a conscious effort to avoid unnecessary packing. Where ever possible, the food we prepare in our kitchen comes from regional producers known to us for their responsible approach. We know, for instance, exactly where our breakfast eggs are coming from. And we can rest assured that the coffee and teas we serve enable small scale farmers elsewhere to earn a livelihood. We can’t change the world – but we know we can make a difference, a small step at a time.
At the Hotel UHU we make the best of modern technology, starting with small details.
We use efficient LED lighting and sensors to keep our energy consumption low. And we don’t stop there. We actually produce almost 90 percent of our electric energy and cover three quarters of our heating needs ourselves in our own Dachs cogeneration unit. If you happen to have an e-bike or even an e-car: You are welcome to hook up anytime for a complementary re-fill at our own charging station.
As you can probably tell from our signage, the German word „Uhu“ means night owl. It should come as no surprise, then, that we want to support the protection and care of these wonderful birds of prey. As it happens, there is a station devoted to just this purpose in the nearby Königsforst, and we have become the sponsors for two night owls there. Whenever we have a chance we go by to say hello. To the folks working there. And to our birds. We think they even know us by now.
Good intentions are nice, but tangible results are even better. So we agreed to have Andrea Appel, graduate of RheinMain technical college, eco-audit our hotel as part of her bachelor thesis. Her conclusion in a nutshell: We are achieving noticeable results but should be able to reduce our carbon footprint by another 10 percent. We take this as positive reinforcement and will continue to live our commitment to an integrated approach that embraces ecological, economical and social objectives.
By the way: To balance our remaining CO2 emissions, we are supporting the certified environmental project „ArBolivia“. It is devoted to the reforestation of Bolivian woodlands and is considered to be exemplary in its kind.
Over the years our efforts have met with very positive feedback:
